Gissing RSS News Server to deliver news in secure trading room environments

Old news isn’t news, because everybody already knows it, and in the Financial Services industry, someone’s already made money by acting upon it.

But in may trading room environments there is either limited or no access to the internet and there may be only a single news feed.

To address these issues, Gissing Software is working on a new product: the Gissing RSS News Server. This will enable you to have access to almost any news source you need, filtered by keyword or company name. And it does it without compromising the security of your dealing room. It does this by subscribing to, and then routing the information from, RSS news feeds.

Who uses RSS?

Almost every major news agency provides an RSS news feed. News sites with RSS feeds include:

  • BBC News
  • The Wall Street Journal
  • CNN
  • Associated Press
  • Reuters
  • Business Wire
  • PR Newswire

What’s RSS?

Really Simple Syndication is a kind of web page designed to be read by a specialised computer program rather than a person. The computer program, of which Gissing RSS News Server is one example, subscribes to the page and then each time a new story appears or some content changes, the program is notified.

If you have full internet access you can use RSS news feeds in a dedicated RSS news reader such as RSS Xpress and WinRSS. Many internet browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari can use RSS news feeds too.

The benefit is that the news you want, from the sources you trust, comes to you without you having to go search for it.

RSS in a Market Data Environment

But if you don’t have unrestricted internet access, or if you can’t install software on your system because it’s locked down, how do you ensure you have the latest news that might affect market prices? The answer is Gissing RSS News Server.

Gissing RSS News Server

Our product comes in several configurations depending on the level of security your organisation implements, but the all work the same way:

  • An external component, with internet access, holds the configuration of which news sites to subscribe to and which stories to retrieve.
  • This communicates via a secure interface to an internal component
  • The internal component communicates with the individual terminals, either via TCP/IP or by publishing the information directly onto your Market Data Platform (RMDS, Triarch or TIBCO Rendezvous).
  • The internal component caches the news stories so that no direct link to the internet from the trading terminal is necessary.

Supported Terminals

Gissing RSS News Server works with:

  • Reuters Kobra
  • Reuters 3000 Xtra
  • Bloomberg terminal
  • Microsoft Windows PC with a web browser
